I never understood how people could only pepper their culinary repertoire with sweets and snacks, without fearing the temptation to binge. If you don't go into a binge, what is the point really? Okay. Tonight I saw a glimmer of a point. If you eat healthily as a rule, your experience of life has a certain dryness. If food is primarily a health based venture, you might go days without any rush from your eating choices. So when you add that little bit of cheat food in the course of a day, you'll experience the effect of that rush, but this time you actually sense it happening. Because of that, you have a basis for comparison. You have your everyday sense of the world around you, and then you have this enhanced experience of it. Another way of looking at it is this: by building up your appreciation of life without the aid of a food-y drug, the addition of the zestier foods actually has the emotional punch that it is designed for. It clearly has no nutritional or caloric value, but the emotional value shouldn't be discounted. I believe this is what normal types of eaters know instinctually, but what someone who uses food as a constant state-of-mind IV drip wouldn't realize.

This is exciting for me. I want to be able to enjoy the experience of eating different kinds of foods. If I can differentiate between life sustaining foods and mood enhancing ones, then I can be selective as to which ones I choose to ingest at any given moment. I can't tell you how incredible it was when I put 2 and 2 together and realized that my rush of good, warm feelings were connected to a specific food that I ate a couple of hours earlier.
